ABOUT
To define Violeiro Bacurau, we can present two perspectives. An instrumental view, where jazz experimentation meets Brazilian popular culture, rock, and Oriental music. And also a perspective related to songs and lyrics, where traditional Brazilian popular songwriting meets rock’s questioning nature in connection with spirituality and hidden wisdom.

Violeiro Bacurau is a musical project launched in 2020, led by musician Phillippi Oliveira (from Recife-PE), which is founded on instrumental music for the viola caipira or ten-string guitar. The project emerges from the practice of improvisation, combining influences from rock, traditional Brazilian country songwriting, and Oriental music. Its works include both instrumental pieces and songs that navigate between Brazilian popular culture, questioning the world, hidden wisdom, and spirituality.
Amidst the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, Violeiro Bacurau was first introduced to the public with the release of a series of twelve videos entitled “YouTube Sessions”, which aired on YouTube every Sunday from May 3 to July 19 of 2020. The twelve videos display live performances in solo format; such performances afterward became the tracks of the project’s first album called “Voo do Bacurau Sobre o Rio Abaixo”.
In 2022 thanks to the governmental cultural funding law “Lei Aldir Blanc”, was produced in video and audio format the live performance of “Voo do Bacurau Sobre o Rio Abaixo (Ao Vivo | Em Trio)”, a new version of the first album “Voo do Bacurau Sobre o Rio Abaixo” based on a trio ensemble with Phillippi Oliveira on the Brazilian viola, Zé Freire on the seven strings guitar and Rodrigo Félix on the percussions. The project was first released in video format (YouTube) on March 30th of 2022 and afterward was also released on major audio streaming providers.
VOO DO BACURAU SOBRE O RIO ABAIXO
Released on May 21 of 2021, the album “Voo do Bacurau Sobre o Rio Abaixo” is the first album of Violeiro Bacurau, an artist name adopted by the musician Phillippi Oliveira (PE – Brazil) to manifest his artistic expression through the Brazilian viola. The album comes as a deep dive into the universe of Brazilian viola exploring sound textures that influence the artist, from Brazilian traditional country music to progressive rock and oriental music. The piece features a majority of instrumental tracks but also some songs with vocals, all of the tracks were recorded in single takes with performances that can be watched on the project’s YouTube channel. The album released in digital format is composed of the remastering of the twelve solo performances from the series “YouTube Sessions” plus the track “Eclipse”. The “Voo do Bacurau Sobre o Rio Abaixo” also incorporated the self-knowledge context of the project, as all the tracks in this album were recorded using 432Hz tuning, system which can induce a highly meditative mood.
VIOLA E FREQUÊNCIAS DE CURA
Viola e Frequencias de Cura (Viola and Healing Frequencies) is a YouTube series that once a week regarded one specific audio frequency related to the energetic vortexes of the human body so-called “chakras” altogether to the improvisation on the Brazilian viola. Based on a mathematical correlation we managed to experiment with each chakra to a specific audio frequency and the purpose of the series was to seek a moment of meditation related to each chakra and its function.
